How the estimate works

  1. Self-employment tax

92.35% of your profit is taxed at 15.3%: 12.4% Social Security on the first $184,500 of combined earnings, plus 2.9% Medicare. R2

  2. Income tax

Half the self-employment tax comes off your income, then the 2026 standard deduction, the business income deduction and the 2026 tax brackets. R4 R5

  3. Safe harbor

You must pay in the smaller of 90% of your 2026 tax or 100% of your 2025 tax, or 110% if your 2025 AGI was over $150,000. R3

Questions

Is this tax advice?

No. It is an estimate built from the IRS 2026 Form 1040-ES worksheet. Your real tax depends on your full return. If your situation is complicated, talk to a tax professional.

The IRS worksheet is free. Why pay $19?

It is, and the calculator above is free too. The $19 plan fills in the worksheet for you, lays out all four payments, gives you calendar reminders and a 2027 starting amount. If you would rather fill in the form yourself, the link is in Sources.

I missed earlier 2026 payments. Is it too late?

No. Paying now still helps. The IRS charges the penalty on each underpayment for the number of days it remains unpaid, so the sooner you catch up, the smaller it gets. R10

Do I need to pay estimated tax at all?

Usually yes if you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits. The calculator tells you when you fall under that line or when your withholding already covers you. R3

Does it include state tax?

No. It covers federal income tax, self-employment tax and the Additional Medicare Tax. State estimated tax rules differ.

What does it leave out?

Capital gains rates, alternative minimum tax, refundable credits, the new Schedule 1-A deductions and the business income deduction above $201,750 of taxable income ($403,500 joint). Above that line we leave the deduction out, which makes the estimate higher, not lower.

What happens to my numbers?

They stay in your browser. The page saves your last inputs on your device so the paid plan can pick them up. We never see them.

How do I get the plan after paying?

Stripe sends you straight to your plan page. Bookmark it or email yourself the link from that page; it keeps working. Lost it? Use Find my plan and we email the link to the address you paid with.
